about The I Ching

the i ching Oracle as defined by itself

The main function of an oracle is to speak. (The word oracle comes from the Latin verb orare “to speak.”) In certain ancient cultures people devised methods that allowed them to put questions to the Cosmos, and to receive an answer through a priest or priestess.

The I Ching is the only oracle that has existed in a written form for more than three thousand years. The fact that it can be consulted as a book has unfortunately made people forget that the Cosmos has a voice that can speak directly to any person who sincerely seeks an answer to a question that truly matters. Among such questions are those that concern the following:

·     getting to know oneself

·     learning about the harmonious Cosmos and its Ways

·     bringing ourselves back into harmony with the Cosmos by learning about the human place in it

·     participating in the countless possibilities of living a life that fulfills us

·     accessing Cosmic help for our deepest needs. Those include the renewal of our life force, healing our minds and bodies, self-understanding, and the expression of our unique talents and gifts.

Soon after Carol came to the I Ching, in 1972, she was shown a method of meditating, that is defined in Hexagram 52, Keeping Still. (It is now called “Meditating”). This method allows the voice that replies through the oracle, called “the Sage,“ to make itself clear. Carol has described her experiences in a video posted on YouTube. It is part of a series of videos under the title I Ching. My Key Learning Experiences. See Part 4. The Identity of the Sage.

Years later, Carol was also shown a short method that allowed her to directly ask the Sage questions by tossing three coins. See Article 3: The New Method to Clarify the I Ching’s Message.

When Hanna joined Carol in 1998, they used this method to allow the Sage to clarify and correct the texts of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The result was a new version of the I Ching called, I Ching, the Oracle of the Cosmic Way. Carol has described their process in Article 5. How Our New Version of the I Ching Was Written.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

CAROL K. ANTHONY (1930 - August 2020)

Carol began her study of the I Ching in 1971, during a mid-life crisis, when she was age 41. Her difficulties made her receptive when a friend, desiring to be of help, introduced her to the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the I Ching. It taught her to meditate in a way that helped her to understand what the hexagrams were saying. She kept notes of these insights as they occurred. Within seven years she had a complete set of notes on each hexagram that helped friends understand the hexagrams they received. She quickly realized that her notes filled a unique need. Two meditation experiences led her to publish them under the title, A Guide to the I Ching, and to found Anthony Publishing Company. This book was followed by The Philosophy of the I Ching, in 1981, The Other Way, Experiences in Meditation Based on the I Ching, in 1990, and Love, An Inner Connection, Based on Principles Drawn from the I Ching, in 1993. These books interested other publishers and some of them were translated into German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Croatian.

HANNA MOOG

Born in 1946 and growing up in post war Germany, I had learned to view life as “hard,” and to work, work, work for everything I thought would give me worth. At age 36, I was completely exhausted. It was then that I glimpsed that I could no longer follow the values I had taken for granted. As an answer to my inner call for help, a good friend brought me the biggest gift of my life: the I Ching. I had no one to teach me how to interpret its hexagrams, but was deeply touched by its answers. No human expert could describe, as it did, my difficult situation so perfectly. At the same time, it gave me the deep certainty that something good in my life was waiting to be discovered..., something that meant growth, a new kind of life; and something that would truly fulfill me. Consulting the Richard Wilhelm translation meant that I often only got a glimpse of what the oracle was saying.

Through a number of "helpful coincidences," I was eventually hired by the German publisher Eugen Diederichs Verlag (the original publisher of the Wilhelm translation) to translate into German, a number of English books on the I Ching, including Carol’s four books. I was also given the opportunity to write a number of articles on the I Ching for German magazines, participate in several radio and TV programs, and give lectures and seminars in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

When Carol invited me to join forces with her in 1997, I happily accepted. I could never have imagined the breakthroughs that were to occur in the years that followed:

Together we wrote I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way, (2002), Healing Yourself the Cosmic Way, (2004), and The Psyche Revealed Through the I Ching, (2009). All three books were also published in German and the Oracle book has been published in French. I currently conduct seminars both in the United States and in Europe.

My learning from the I Ching is ongoing. I love sharing my latest discoveries in my seminars. I also invite you to check out what Carol and I have posted in "our blog."
